If one is compromised, then it is likely the other two will be along with it. Take a hangover for example. The biochemical compromise of pumping your body with alcohol has a detrimental effect on your, sleep and general energy leading to psychologically feeling sorry for yourself when in this state. The reduction in energy levels thanks to this compromise of "chemistry” will probably prevent you from doing your morning walk/stretch/gym session leading to the mechanical compromise associated with a lack of movement.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Occasionally, this isn’t so much of a big deal, but chronic exposure to this or similar lifestyle behaviours is cause for concern. So, regardless of which end of the spectrum we sit, should our respiration strategies be compromised by the postural “norms” we have slipped into, we need to be aware of it and importantly address it.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>These muscles, now pulled in to length through postural positioning and excessive non-functional mass (subcutaneous &amp; visceral), will now generally hold increased tone to resist further lengthening. Along with this, the superficial muscles of the abdomen will hold tension to resist “unnecessary” lengthening/instability.  If you’ve ever wondered why “beer guts” tend to be so hard, it's generally related to this theory, increased tone consistently (so we don't completely lack integrity/stability at the spine and pelvis).  Not only do we have an increased abdominal tension/tone, we now have a “bracing” strategy everytime generate force or require stability or movement from the trunk.  The classic stiffening &amp; breath hold of someone with a large “gut” getting up from a chair comes to mind.  This is a reinforcing pattern of increased stiffness and bracing leading to the evils of some of the symptoms described above (haemorrhoids, herniations, rectus diastases specifically).</image:caption>

This contraction of the uterus, with the accumulated high tone/stress in all the surrounding muscles as discussed above, is where the relationship of pelvic pain and postural and musculoskeletal tension becomes apparent.  Furthermore, as identified in our “blokes with guts” counterparts, this narrow high tone, tight waist and poor moving abdominal cavity leads to compromised breathing strategies in which the diaphragm doesn’t “move down” on inhale, the lower rib cage lacks expansion driving short shallow respiration strategies.</image:title>
      <image:caption>As we know the wash up effect is less efficient gaseous exchange, reinforcing stressed neurological/psychological states resulting in a potential spiralling effect on the entire system with potentially catastrophic outcomes.</image:caption>

If you've been following along with the SOF HQ strength program in this current block, you will have noticed the inclusion of 'cluster sets'. So, what is a cluster set? A cluster set is a set that's broken down into two or more mini-sets, with short intra-set rest periods between them (10-20 seconds). The weight is re-racked or put down during these short rest periods, allowing the muscles to recover slightly before the next mini-set. To picture this, you might be back squatting, you'll do three reps, re-rack the weight, rest for 10-15 seconds, then do another three reps. That entire sequence is one set.</image:caption>
