Embracing the Power of Play: Unleashing the Potential of Today’s Youth

Looking back on my time growing up I remember spending countless hours outside. That is possibly the single greatest theme of my childhood. I was lucky enough to live next to a creek where all the local kids would play every afternoon. I was also lucky enough to have parents that encouraged me to participate in as many sports as I could. Every weekend consisted of some form of competition and physical activity. It’s safe to say that being active and playing sports has shaped who I am today. Which means that I’ll most likely continue this trend as it has become who I am.

Which leads me to the thought of what would have happened if I didn’t have those opportunities.

What if I didn’t learn how to play, move, learn skills and see the value of physical activity?

The unfortunate reality is that most children today do not have the same experience and have been robbed of the opportunity to play and discover how to move, solve movement puzzles and feel the benefits that are associated.

It’s much harder to learn these skills later in life and build them into a daily routine for better physical and mental health. I’ve seen this first hand. As I’ve grown up and given back to the communities and sports that have shaped my life I can see the value in starting young.

However, I am still lucky enough to be able to give back and change this for the better. I am so proud of the fact that we have a youth program at SOF and I can physically see the positive changes in the kids in the program. I know that if they can continue this trend of moving, playing, and learning skills that they will be leaps and bounds ahead of the child who hasn’t had those opportunities.

The exciting part is that our reach to help the next generation is only just beginning. We’re about to hold our first ever Open Day for the youth program this Sunday! We want to teach kids who haven’t had the same opportunities I had growing up. Teach them the skills, techniques and strategies of moving that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

I wish something like this existed when I was younger, or I wish my parents added this into my already busy schedule. I want this for you and for your child. Together, we can have a massive impact on their lives for the better.

If you’ve read this far it means that some part of this has connected with you. Even if you don’t have children of your own, you probably know someone who does and by sharing this with them you can help to provide an amazing opportunity, that I wish I had growing up.

Our youth program open day is being held this Sunday at 9am. You can find all the details and tickets here and they’re FREE! By hitting the link you can get your child started and change their life.

P.S.

If you can’t make the open day that’s alright, From the 30/05, our youth classes will be held 4 times a week! Monday - Thursday from 3:45 - 4:30 PM. Simply send me an email at sammulherin@scienceoffitness.com.au to get started.
